Named weapons are the rock stars of fantasy lore -- Excalibur, Mjolnir, Sting, Glamdring, Stormbringer. A weapon important enough to have a name is a weapon with a story, and that story transforms a piece of equipment into a character in its own right. The name is the first chapter of that story, the word that makes a fighter's eyes widen when the blade is drawn and someone whispers its title.

Weapon-naming conventions span several traditions. Some weapons are named for their effects: Frostmourne (brings icy death), Stormbringer (calls lightning), Lifedrinker (drains vitality). Others carry the name of their maker or wielder: Aegis-fang (Wulfgar's hammer in Forgotten Realms), Andúril (Flame of the West, reforged for Aragorn). For RPG campaigns, a named weapon elevates a character's identity. Players who wield 'Oathkeeper' or 'The Widowmaker' feel a deeper connection to their gear than those carrying a generic +1 longsword.
