About Demon Names
Demon names writhe on the tongue like something trying to escape. Across religious traditions, occult literature, and fantasy fiction, demon names carry a specific phonetic signature — harsh, discordant, and vaguely forbidden. They are names that sound like they were never meant to be spoken by mortal mouths.
The Western demonological tradition provides a rich catalog of names. The Ars Goetia lists 72 demons, each with a name, rank, and domain: Asmodeus, Belphegor, Astaroth, Malphas, Baal. These names draw from Hebrew, Sumerian, Greek, and Latin roots, often corruptions of pagan deity names absorbed into Christian demonology. In D&D, the distinction between demons (chaotic evil, from the Abyss) and devils (lawful evil, from the Nine Hells) produces different naming styles — demon names tend to be rawer and more chaotic.
Creating an original demon name means embracing dissonance. Harsh consonant clusters (zr, kth, ghr), guttural vowels, and unexpected syllable breaks create that sense of wrongness that a good demon name needs. The name should be uncomfortable — not just evil-sounding, but subtly difficult to say, as if language itself resists giving shape to the entity.
