Armies are the instruments through which kingdoms project power, empires expand, and history pivots. A named army is more than a collection of soldiers -- it is an institution with traditions, a reputation, and an identity that outlasts any individual campaign. Military naming conventions follow several patterns. Numbered designations (the 501st, the Ninth Legion) suggest bureaucratic organization and vast scale. Named companies (the Band of the Hawk, the Iron Company) imply either elite status or mercenary independence. Poetic titles (the Lions of the West, the Deathless Guard) suggest legendary reputation. Real militaries throughout history have used all these approaches, sometimes simultaneously.

For fantasy world-builders, army names communicate military culture. An army called the Radiant Legion sounds disciplined, holy, and organized -- probably an empire's elite force. The Ashborne Irregulars sound scrappy, unconventional, and possibly mercenary. The Silent Host sounds terrifying and might not be entirely alive. Each name sets expectations about doctrine, morale, equipment, and the kind of opposition adventurers will face.
